H. Winston Haskell 1925-2009
...Obituary
H. Winston Haskell, 83, passed away Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, at his home in Medina.
He was born Nov. 13, 1925, in Columbia, Mo. He spent his childhood until the age of 15 in Kuling and Wuhu, China, where his parents, Walter and Ethel Haskell, ran a school for children of missionaries. He returned to the United States to complete high school in West Plains, Mo. He served in the Merchant Marine from 1943 to 1946, serving in the Atlantic and Mediterranean war zones, including the Murmansk Run.
Mr. Haskell graduated from the University of Washington-Seattle in 1953 with a degree in chemistry. He became an international sales manager for Dow Chemical Co. in 1953. He moved with his wife and three children to Zurich, Switzerland, and later to Sao Paulo, Brazil, as well as to assignments in Philadelphia, Pa., Buffalo, N.Y., Midland, Mich., Scituate, Mass., and Minneapolis, Minn. He retired to Niceville, Fla., in 1983 before moving to Medina in 1994.
Mr. Haskell was a man of many talents. He was a jogger long before running for fitness was a common pursuit. He was a self-taught musician, artist and craftsman. One of his greatest loves was sailing, which began while navigating junks on the Yangtzee River in China as a young teenager. He was well known for his charm, wit and intelligence, as well as for his facility with foreign languages, which included Mandarin, German, French and Portuguese. Mr. Haskell leaves behind many who will miss him greatly. He will be fondly remembered by the staff and residents of Camelot Place and Forest Meadows Villas in Medina, where he lived and was well cared for over the last 13 years.
He is survived by his son, Bruce (Elaine) Haskell, and grandsons, Luke and Conner Haskell of Brewster, N.Y.; son, Brian (Monika) Haskell, and granddaughters, Julie Haskell and her son, Evan Haskell, and Katie (Brett) Kalinowski, of Medina; daughter, Barbara (Mark) Kurz, and granddaughters, Nellie and Olivia Kurz of Falmouth, Mass.; sister, Helen Orthey and niece, Janet (Joe) Mosby of Vacaville, Calif.; and brother, Walter (Evelyn) Haskell of Phoenix, and niece and nephew, Katherine (Carl) Riney of Phoenix and Joan Cook of Summerville, Ga.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Jo (nee Moseley) Haskell, in 1995 after a lengthy illness. They were married June 6, 1944, in Louisville, Ky.
A memorial service for Winston and Jo is being planned for the late spring or early summer in Medina.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Waite & Son Funeral Homes, Medina Chapel, is handling the arrangements.
