Betty Haskell
Betty Haskell, `World-Class Samaritan'... whose life was focused on friends and family before her death last Thursday of heart failure. Mrs. Haskell, 76, was a retired writer who divided her time between homes in Mountlake Terrace and Mesa, Ariz. She enjoyed golfing and painting and was a member of National Press Women. Even when her health was failing, she continued to attend the organization's annual conferences.
"She was professional until the end," said her friend Mary Norris, who worked with her for years at Seattle City Light.
Mrs. Haskell was editor of the agency's in-house publication, City Light News. She retired from the department in 1980. Before that, she was a copy writer and producer for KRKO radio in Everett - a job that stemmed from prior work at radio stations, including a position as the chief copy writer for KING radio in 1948-49. Her professional accomplishments were recognized with many awards, including the National Federation of Press Women Award and a United Way of King County Editorial Award. But people mattered to her most.
"She was always trying to help people," said Kevin Haskell, her son. "That probably gave her more satisfaction - to help other people - than to help herself. That was important to her."
Mrs. Haskell was born in Yonkers, N.Y., and grew up in Wilmette, Ill., near Chicago. She graduated from Northwestern University's School of Speech with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1942. That same year she married Richard Haskell, who remained her partner until his death in 1988. The couple moved to Oklahoma, where she received a Master's degree in education from the University of Oklahoma in 1945. Her love of learning continued through her life. "If there's a university in heaven, she's there," said her daughter, Peggy McCartney. "That, or the 18th green."
In addition to her son and daughter, Mrs. Haskell is survived by her younger brother, Robert Ellis of Michigan; nephew Robert Ellis Jr. of Michigan; niece Mary Ellis of Michigan; and four grandchildren.
Memorials may go to the American Heart Association or the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
