BETSEY MARIAH (CUNNINGHAM) HASKELL
OBITUARY [Found in scrapbook made by Climena Schaibly, now in possession of George Schaibly of Woodland, MI]
Betsy Mariah Cunningham, oldest daughter of Patrick and Laura Cunningham, was born in Woodland township, April 29, 1857, and died at her home in Woodland township, July 1, 1930, aged 73 years, two months and two days.
Under the labors of Rev. Benjamin Mower, while he was the pastor on this field of labor 55 years ago, she was soundly converted at a prayer meeting in the old Tamarac school house where services were held long before the church was built. She joined the dear old church of her choice and has stood firm to her faith and the doctrine of the church through all its troubles through which it has passed.
May 13, 1877 she was united in marriage to Dennis Haskell. To this union three children were born. Cary was born in the year 1880. Emma M., November 28, 1890, and Clay Hill, November 14, 1892, all of whom preceded her to the Great Beyond.
Sister Haskell has always lived in and around the community where she died and commanded the love and respect of all who knew her, and with her faithful husband they have tread life's pathway hand in hand toward the setting of the sun, and shared together all the blessings and sorrows of life. They helped to build and maintain the Tamarac church,and the latch string was always out for all the old ministers and families.
For the past few years she has been in declining health but at last her death came as a shock to all.
She leaves to mourn their loss a devoted husband, one brother George Cunningham of Campbell township, and two sisters, Mrs. Smith of Lake Odessa and Mrs. Lear of Grand Ledge, and three grandchildren, Myrtle and Loren Oversmith and Alta Haskell who lives with the grandparents, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Her funeral was held at the Tamarac church July 4, and she was laid at
rest by her children in the Lakeside cemetery.
