Summary Lloyd Clarke was known as the pioneer of the Gulf barramundi fishing industry. He started helping his father who was also in the fishing industry, at the age of twelve. Caloundra residents, the Clarke family still have netting rights to net sea mullet along the Kings Beach and Kawana coast lines.

Lloyd Clarke's boat: The "Larry Cork" fitted with two GM diesels and with twelve thousand pound capacity refrigeration left Caloundra for the remote and little known region of Karumba in the Gulf of Carpentaria in the early 1950s. Lloyd used celestial navigation and charts to navigate the coastline on his way to Karumba from Caloundra. Clarke's first venture with the Larry Cork in that region was between 1954 and 1957. He negotiated with the Federal Government an air freight subsidy of 6 pence per pound of fish flown out of the Gulf region mainly to Mount Isa but sometimes to Brisbane, Townsville and Alice Springs. Vast amounts of prawns were also identified in the Gulf area due to Lloyd Clarke informing CSIRO of their existence. Lloyd Clarke is known as the pioneer of the Gulf barramundi fishing industry.
