National Archives personnel file shows William Raymond Cairns SN:114 departing on HMAT Medic. His embarkation date at Brisbane was 2 June 1915. His father James was also on the same ship. William joined the same 11th Light Horse Brigade as his father on 20th January 1915 at Mackay. His mother, Mrs Laura Mary Heel of Othello Street, Mackay was listed as next of kin. He is reputed by family oral history to have met his father "on the beach at Gallipoli'. This must have been a shock as it is generally believed that the children had been told that their father was deceased.
